Brenya Twumasi - Swimming Biography, Olympic Qualifier
Written by: Roberta Gardiner, Former School Coach 1973 – 1978
Brenya began swimming at Legon Primary - where she became the fastest swimmer male/female in four strokes: butterfly, breast stroke, freestyle and backstroke. I met her as one of my students at Achimota Secondary School (formerly known as Prince Of Wales College) an elite mixed-sex boarding School on Ghana, West Africa. I was her Swimming Mentor and assigned Brenya as the student swim coach. As such, among her duties she had to arrange for all School swimmers to arrive at the Pool at the crack of dawn (4.30 am at the latest) for swim practice. That is dedication. As delegated School Student-coach Brenya coached then in diving, and all four of her preferred strokes.
Brenya fast became noticed by the National Swim Team - comprised mostly of male Soldiers. She began to train with the Ghana Military and was noted as the National ‘fastest swimmer’. However, her strokes of choice for pre Olympic training were Backstroke and Breast stroke, and she became known as the Nations fastest Backstroke swimmer and fastest female breast stroke swimmer.
Unfortunately in 1976 she was unable to swim in the Olympics representing Ghana as Ghana, along with other nations, boycotted the Olympics. The boycott was related to advocating in a stand against Apartheid in South Africa. As you may imagine the athletes were devastated.
Three years later she joined the Johns Hopkins Varsity Team under Coach Welch. Other than swimming I have known Brenya and coached her as an all round Athlete. She performed for Prince Charles during his visit to the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the school of his name now renamed Achimota Secondary School, accompanied by the President of Ghana, as the lead for swimming and co-lead for gymnastics.
She also distinguished herself in her Field and Track events as a sprinter and hurdler. Years later, in 2019, I watched her first triathlon event held at the University of Ghana Campus in 2019. I was there among a handful of her past schoolmates to support her. It brought back so many memories as we cheered her on. Since then she has participated in several Triathlon events in Texas, USA.
